Take the pledge
30 second political ads—yuk!
There is a lot of upset over the amount of money in congressional and presidental elections. Rightly so. This problem needs to be addressed, and I will do this later.
Right now I want to focus on a short term solution to the the whole problem of the candidate with the most money, and not always the best ideas, winning the election most of the time.
Of course a lot of the money is used for 30 second campaign spots. And a lot of this is negative campaigning. Further, it is almost impossible to explain complex economic issues, etc in 30 seconds. Basically 30 second ads are totally worthless in deciding who is the best candidate. Basically they only help television outlets with the bottom line
So I propose that we, both democrats and republicans, take the pledge not to listen to any 30 political second ads from either party. This will involve several steps on your part. While any 30 ad is on, you may choose to leave the room, block your eyes, look away, make funny sounds to yourself, start talking to your significant other, read the paper, etc.
Now you can take the pledge simply by replying to this blog entry. That way it will feel like you are making a commitment. Your pledge will be listed here forever, so you cannot renege on your pledge.
Of course if you accidently see a second or two of a political ad, that is OK…..we dont want to be nutty about this.
Further if you choose not to take the plegde, that is OK also. Just remember that the ads are mostly baloney and dont give you enough information to make an informed choice.
The lines are open, make your pledge now.
