The cigarette industry is thriving even though the world population; every man, woman and child, knows how deadly cigarettes and tobacco in general are. Why? Why does the industry flourish to the tune of billions of dollars annually?
Because everyone who smokes is telling themselves one of three things: 1.) I’m going to stop if I experience any adverse effects and before it gets me. 2.) I’m betting I’m one of the lucky ones. (in other words, they’re betting they are fortunate enough to be hit by a train or drive off a bridge before the inevitable BIG C or heart failure hits). 3.) Their life sucks so bad that…fuck it.
Don’t get me wrong; I smoked for over forty years and in all likelihood, it will be some form of effect from that that kills me and still I defend a person’s right to do it, even in public.
When there are hundreds of millions of people in the world with this mind-set is it any wonder that they can’t be expected to grasp the finer points of political cause and effect?
I think not.
