Currently unavailable for purchase

When is a barrel not a barrel? There are 7 sizes of kegs (an alternative name) and only one of them is referred to as an actual barrel!
Each has it’s own name and holds different amounts of beer, ale or wine. The individual names for kegs are believed to have designated back in around 1454.

Name (UK Gallons)
Pin or Polypin (4.5)
Firkin (9)
Kilderkin (18)
Barrel (36)
Hogshead (54)
Butt (108)

  • Thanks Colleen, I found out about the different names when I was doing a bit of research to find a good name for the picture, it’s surprising how many names I had heard of but not worked out the significance of.
