It was my Mother-In-Law’s birthday recently and my wife wanted to get a picture of our first born son printed for her as a present. We looked through all the recent photos – kids at that age change so much so quickly we wanted to have a recent shot done – and couldn’t really find anything suitable. So I decided it was time for a photo shoot! I told my wife to get Jake ready and meet me out in our garden.
When she came out with him he had bed hair and was still wearing his dressing gown. “I said get him ready”, I said, to which she replied “It’s okay, we’ll only show his face”. I tried to argue that in the end those things may have to be in the shot but she was adamant that it would be “okay”.
After the shoot (which produced around 165 photos) we went through them and whittled them down to a handful of potentials.
Recently I’d given thought to starting my own child photography business but after this exercise I’ve decided to scrap it. Parents are just too picky!
In the end this is the one we decided was the best, one of the reasons for choosing it was the space around Jake’s face, which incidentally had to include his bed hair and dressing gown.
But I’m not the type to say “I told you so”, and ultimately I really like the shot as much because of those things as for any of the other imperfections.
