It was my Mother-In-Law’s birthday recently and my wife wanted to get a picture of our first born son printed for her as a present. We looked through all the recent photos – kids at that age change so much so quickly we wanted to have a recent shot done – and couldn’t really find anything suitable. So I decided it was time for a photo shoot! I told my wife to get Jake ready and meet me out in our garden.

When she came out with him he had bed hair and was still wearing his dressing gown. “I said get him ready”, I said, to which she replied “It’s okay, we’ll only show his face”. I tried to argue that in the end those things may have to be in the shot but she was adamant that it would be “okay”.

After the shoot (which produced around 165 photos) we went through them and whittled them down to a handful of potentials.

Recently I’d given thought to starting my own child photography business but after this exercise I’ve decided to scrap it. Parents are just too picky!

In the end this is the one we decided was the best, one of the reasons for choosing it was the space around Jake’s face, which incidentally had to include his bed hair and dressing gown.

But I’m not the type to say “I told you so”, and ultimately I really like the shot as much because of those things as for any of the other imperfections.

so beautiful!! I think the bed hair and the dressing gown is perfect hehe capturing as he is. And on the subject of children photography, i think you must have had your photographer’s hat on and not your dad hat hehe

    great work pete :)

I think the ‘dressing gown’ look is rather endearing! Fantastic portrait, those eyes are just beautiful – so luminous. Great composition and looks fab in b&w. A portrait any parent would be proud to own! :o)

This stood out to me right away when I landed on your page. It’s a great shot — well composed, great values, and so damn cute. I could happily hang this on my wall, and I don’t even know Jake!

This shot is spectacular and he looks ADORABLE. I never would have guessed he had ‘bed hair’ until I read the description… Little kids always have slightly messy hair… It’s part of what makes them kids! Jake is a very handsome boy none the less =] You are a VERY talented portrait photographer… You make me want to do a photoshoot with my niece and nephew!!!

  • Thanks Cadence, you are too kind! Your portrait shots are so crystal clear and vibrantly colourful that a shoot with your niece and nephew would be fantastic I’m sure. I’m blown away by your talent, the way you seem to effortlessly shift from one style of photography to another. I hope to one day take you up on the offer of checking out Chicago fuzzballs and insomniac bumblebees! :o)
