I love the back alleys of Melbourne, the steam and the grease and the pipelines and stained windows. The rotting vegetable smell and the piss trails running from darkened doorways. No pretty facade, just the entrails, the works, the wires, the pieces no one is really meant to see. There’s something old and yet futuristic about it all. It can be lunch hour in the city but travel down one of these dead-end alleys and you are all alone, nothing but the buildings watching over you – your only glimpse of sky as you peer up between the looming walls that make you feel off-balanced and gives you an uneasy sense of being captured. You squint up into the thin line of firmament previewed to you and dream of taking off, soaring up into the blinding white to be gone.
