The moon loomed just above where the Earth met the sky.
It shown the color of mermaid hair—
Shades of gold
From virgin to tarnished
And everywhere in between.
As the ocean releases long and lively locks—
Who’ve been tamed and locked down by gravity—
And sends the strands swaying and spreading,
Breathing with the currents,
The giant rock that shown the color of mermaid hair
Freed the ocean from its tidal prison.
The mermaid shook her hair.
The waves waved goodbye to the sand
Their lips sore from forced hello kisses
Pulled back into the ocean’s outstretched arms.
Now the ripples pulled the waves up into the air
Higher than they ever had been.
The mermaid collected the coolness
And wrapped herself in it.
Hanging in the artificial womb, she watched the sea rage below.
