An Ode to Nothing by Xavier Russo

Can nothing be an important concept in itself?

This poem pays homage to the invention of zero as a number, in the form of a rhyming riddle. And (foolishly for my sanity) I decided to add the constraint that the first letter of each line would spell out the alphabet.

Thanks mark – i tried to avoid that old cliche of using a word starting with “ex” and just removing the “e”.

Of course zero is an important concept. I bought a book called “Zero: the Biography of a Dangerous Idea” by Charles Seife just recently, although I haven’t read it yet, and another book I’ve got about calendars and the calculation thereof points out that the Romans didn’t have zero so they couldn’t do decimals etc… Zero is a very cool idea!

This just got linked up in the forums as an example of how to make poetry sellable. I hadn’t seen it before … very impressed.

Nice idea with the ode, and a great idea of putting it up for sale as an image!
