Competitions rock. In my humble opinion, anyway. But what do you think about their role on RedBubble and how much we should support and encourage them?
We’ve had a few competitions already, some official, some member-organised. The more high profile ones have helped bring new members to the site, and all of them seem to grab people’s attention and add energy to the community.
Our Unleashed digital image and short story competitions attracted over 1000 entries, with the competition info page being the 4th most popular page for people to enter RedBubble. From a marketing standpoint, this gives me great confidence for investing in future competitions.
There have already been some great initiatives started by members of the community (as well as insightful feedback on the issues with our current approach to competitions from timijimi, boothy, and others)
- e.g. Resisto started the Tweaker07 photomanipulation challenge, which got a very enthusiastic response
Now we all know the current system for handling competitions ain’t perfect. To keep it simple, we’ve used existing functionality – tags as a way to enter, favourites to handle voting, and search/profiles to display entries.
So, how about a purpose-built Competition Platform?
Any RedBubble member could set up a competition and define the rules for how it would work (e.g. number of entries, who judges and how, closing date, legals, prizes, etc). Supporting this would be functionality for both organisers (e.g. competition setup, disqualify, judge) and for members (e.g. vote button, view entries, competition listings)
I’d love to see singer/songwriters running design comps for their album cover, or arts festivals having t-shirt design competitions. I suspect we’ll be surprised how creative people will be in using this functionality. We’d also use it for official RedBubble (global) competitions
Over to you for feedback: Would you use a Competition Platform like this? What features would need to be part of it? How do you feel about having lots of competitions on the site, some official RedBubble ones, others member-organised?
