Bee-Line to My Flowers
Photographing these tiny creatures isn’t my style. However, while in my back garden with the camera, I saw this little fellow buzzing over the lavender bush. I extended the zoom to its longest focal length, closed in and shot him a few times. Except for a bit of cropping, this photo is being presented ‘as-is’.

Fantastic shot…amazing work :)
Xandru replied
Thank you very much, Angie.
Kathy Nairn
Simply beautiful Xandru. The clarity of the bee is spot on. Using a zoom is the only way I will get ‘close’ to these little bugs that pack a big punch. ;) (I’m a wimp). LOL
Xandru replied
Hi Kathy, love to see you around my neighborhood. Yes, a zoom is the only way to close in on these tiny fellas, but it still feels like taking pot shots :) Many thanks for the kind comments.
Taylor Sawyer
Wow! Amazing work Alex!! Great job!
Xandru replied
Thanks Taylor, your comments are really appreciated.

very great work;
Xandru replied
Thanks a lot Scott, much appreciated.
David Friederich
Perfect, Alex. You have inspired me, although I won’t see bees for another 6-8 weeks. I am surprised you were able to capture this so perfectly without a macro lens.
Xandru replied
Hi David. A macro would have been the perfect lens, but there’s no way I could have closed in to within a few inches. Although its not the right lens, a zoom allowed me to ‘close-in’ from a distance. Many thanks for your visit and comments.
BYRON
So Xandru, this isn’t your style huh?
You should be beaten with a wet salmon for getting such a technically and artistically well executed photo.
You should be doing more of this.
You have checked every box in getting this right.
Xandru replied
Hi Byron. I will refrain from commenting on the salmon beating:-) However, with my hand on my chest I swear that this was the first time I attempted photographing insects. The ‘box-checking’ comes automatic to me, almost sub-consciously, from years of photography. And if it looks like I have a talent for this type of photography, I’ll gladly take this path. Thanks a lot for dropping by and your comments.
Svetlana Sewell
WOW, what a shot, fantastic!!!

Caroline Gorka
Maybee (duh! ) not your style, but this is one of the best lavendar/bee pics I’ve seen.
Spot on clarity :)
Xandru replied
Many thanks for the kind comments Caroline, much appreciated.
Jan Timmons
I agree – you have a talent for this “style”. You certainly did close in on the bee-line. I’ve not seen such clarity in a flying bee. Remarkable shot.
Xandru replied
Hi Jan. Ok, maybe there is a bit of “talent” in this shot. But I am sure everybody agrees that there is also some luck in it too:) Thanks for dropping by and the comments.
Gavin Maginness
What an awesome capture. Congratulations
Xandru replied
Thank you very much for the visit and your comments, Gavin.
Jan Timmons
Luck? Isn’t that one of the top-ten things that photographers hear? Lucky you had your camera with you, the skill and expertise to move in closely, shoot in focus with the right settings, good dof and a fast shutter speed, etc. I see. You’re one of the modest chaps. I admire that.
Xandru replied
LOL … I like your interpretation of luck, Jan. Now this is what I mean by “luck”.
I put camera in manual, extend the zoom lens to its maximum, checked ISO and WB, set exposure to f/6.3 (at 85mm focal length f/6.3 should give me some bokeh), after checking available light I set aperture to 1/1000 (enough to freeze almost everything), closed in to the shortest focusing distance (1.3ft for this lens), focused manually on the flower where the bee seemed to concentrate, and … prayed that the bee will land on this flower. It did land on the flower and took off and landed again and took off … all the time clicking away. I knew I had a couple of good pix with the bee on the flower, but I wanted more. So I started following the bee with the camera while shooting, and that’s when I lost focus of the flower (see the blurred flower above). But luckily (please note my emphasis on “luckily”) I still managed to get the bee and keep it in focus.
What I am trying to say is that although I “checked all the boxes” (as Byron above said), I still depended on a bit of luck to get it right :))
mc27
... great great shot!!
Xandru replied
Many thanks MC, much appreciated.
Elizabeth Bravo
WOW, this is so very cool. That bee looks like he’s suspended. Do you have him tied to a string? No, I can see the wings, but just barely. FANTASTIC SHOT!!!
Xandru replied
Thanks for dropping by and your kind comments Elizabeth. The bee’s wings are blurred because they move so fast that an aperture of 1/1000 sec wasn’t enough to freeze them. As for suspending him from a string …. hmmm … now that’s a good idea. Where can I find an invincible string ? :))
Xandru replied
Sorry, I meant exposure of 1/1000 sec.
AnnieSnel
Wow. Fantastic shot!
Xandru replied
Thanks a lot Annie.
Anthony Vella
Excellent capture my friend. As for the invisible string, I use it all the time and I just put a ball of it on your desk the other day….too bad you didn’t see it. lol.
Xandru replied
Now you’re making me go to my office and look for that invisible string :)) Many thanks for dropping by Tony.

Catherine Sherman
Awesome. I really appreciate the work you did to achieve this photograph. I follow bees around with my camera, and they never go where you expect them to or stay long enough. I’m definitely put this in my favorites.
Xandru replied
As I said above, there is an element of luck to catch these creatures in mid-flight and keep them in focus. Many thanks for the kind comments and fav, Catherine.

No he did not sting me. My instructions to this little guy were stay suspended in mid-air till I photograph him, and to keep away from me.

TheBlindHog
Well, there is a bit of luck involved, isn’t there? Of all the thousandfold millenia in which the universe has existed, and of all the billionfold solar systems and trillionfold planets, your consciousness most fortuitously alighted here on this furry little rock that just happens to possess all the elements necessary for the good health and succor of your particular life form, notwithstanding the additional elements of myriad flora and fauna, up to and including the birds and, yes, BEES! So, the luck part is where you happen to be present here in this solar system, on this planet, on this continent, in this garden at this exact moment in time. The fact that you have a great eye, tremendous photographic skills and the disposable income to indulge same is the least of it, in my opinion. ;=]
Xandru replied
LOL … I think you made your point loud and clear, BlindHog :-)
However, it still felt like shooting at an F16 flying at mach 2, with a six shooter. Thanks a lot for the compliment.
