….I wanted to capture the essence of the struggle of artists who perform or do art despite circumstances. For me, still playing is very personal… since my father banned us children from learning musical instruments… He didn’t think it was a good career move, to be in the arts, being traumatized earlier by our great granddad who left his family penniless since he died a poor pianist. For me, this is rebellion against creative oppression. Although i did not follow a musical path, I entered the realm of visual arts. And it doesn’t matter where you put the artist, or whatever the situation. True artists will create no matter what.

My father was an artist. He was very critical of my work, he even kicked in my major work for my Higher School Certificate. It has taken me all this time ( i’m now 48) to start to believe in myself, and be free to express. Thank you so much for sharing your story.

  • thank you for also sharing your story cate :) I am happy that you have finally found your own voice.

well said and well done. If i had not been opressed at an early age my artistic ability would have been on a much higher level.

  • …it’s never too late to take up that camera or learn painting :) Keep the passion alive :)

Your work is absolutely beautiful…what medium did you use here?

  • I used ordinary acrylics. plus gold paint (acrylic based also), the flash in my camera just enhanced the gold colors

Beautiful work, and I’m really impressed with your statement. I hear this type of story from so many artists. I was fortunate that my parents were very supportive, though they had 11 kids and few resources. I’m glad you still create! A fave here.

  • thanks alice! it’s also heartbreaking to know that the realm of visual arts in my country is riddled with politics. But then, despite heartbreaks, doing art is a priesthood.I always fall back to it.

So glad I found this! You have a really engaging style – beautiful images and stories that just draw the viewer in. I wanted to study art at school but like lots of other people was discouraged by my parents. It is true that artists always find a way, because now I’m teaching myself to paint!

  • Hi evie, thank you for your comments! Happy painting!

Terrific image. I feel that way sometimes!

  • There’s a lot of talented artists out there who don’t get support and attention. This is just a little something to keep the faith.
