Girls spinning on a whirling carnival ride during a mid summer’s night; from a series: Sunset on the Small Town Carnival. Owing to the rise of mega-parks and high liability insurance, small town carnivals are rapidly disappearing. Whenever possible I try to document these vanishing icons of the Twentieth Century American landscape.

The original image was shot at 1/15th with a camera flash and 2 remote strobes. The long exposure shows motion and the flash freezes detail. I used opposing color filters on the remotes to get better depth in the subject. In post processing I used a combination of effects from both Illustrator and PhotoShop. The big trick was getting the file size down by rasterizing my AIs in PS and reopening them in AI and re-saving as a vector.

You havve extracte the best of colouring out of these pics… filling the exhilaration and “artificiallity” of this events… they must have magic.. and so you have given them plenty of.
Rosa (thanks Robert for your kind entry on my Cricle Game)

  • I really wanted to catch this at sundown— as part of the sunset metaphor, but now, for this shot anyway, I think the black sky is more dramatic and less distracting than a spectacular sunset. Thank you Rosa! You are a great artist and your thoughts are always very interesting!

    I pic this one again…..
When I was agirl this merry-go-round was my favourite. Up there..all by my way…feeling the air,
at a great speed, though not fearful, I kicked my legs out, just to increase the trepidation, that was lacking in the repetitive go around movement. Somehow seems like the same life…movin around while we are kicking shouting….acting as if something terrible or very exciting is happening.
I love your artistic result too.
Rosa (thanks for your presence in my Helplessly Hoping soul…I have enjoyed it very much)

  • I think what you are describing is a metaphor for life. Perhaps no human is satisfied with comfort. We need the merry-go-round somehow. Thanx Rosa. Your thoughts are always so poetic. You are very much ‘the artist’!

i’ve just had a peep at your art…this is awesome! i love what you’ve done with it, really does capture the magic of a fair, & i love it against the black sky

  • Thank you, Miri (Bex? May I call you Bex?)

I meant to get this shot with a sunset, but my assistant was late. Funny how things work out. I guess I should never be too sure about what I want.

I appreciate that you favorited it!

yes please call me Bex! When i first joined i was feeling quite shy & Miri = fun/lark in Welsh (where i’m originally from) seemed appropriate! can’t change it on RB now, well i can go to Rebecca but i prefer Bex!

This is great Bob. Wonderful colours and movement here. Cheers, s.

  • I had an assistant that night that helped me capture the base images. So I was able to position remote strobes and experiment. Then I traced the image and converted it to a vector.
