Yes mate it was the 105mm macro. I love the clear “rostrum” (spikey thing) on top of the shrimp’s head. Crazy creatures in deed.

how amazing is this, total respect for the underwater photography thing, an even more gear heavy game than the rest of us, but what results.

  • Stephen Colquitt replied

Thanks Travis – its funny I havent always been into underwater photography during my 15 years of scuba diving, but these days I cant image doing a dive without a camera. There is just so much to see and capture down there.

I’m always so surprised by friends who go bushwalking without a camera, although I think a few are more than happy to let me do it all when we walk together.

Incredible,,,,how do you take these,,,its so dark,,,you must have some awesome lighting!!!!

  • Stephen Colquitt replied

Yes the lights we use underwater are called strobes and they are quite powerful. I use two when I am diving underwater, they are made by a company called “Sea and Sea”.

There are macros and there are macros – and this is one of the latter! You’ve even got the tiny “whisker” detail

  • Stephen Colquitt replied

Thanks so much for the feedback Felicity – the whisher detail is amazing isnt it. It took a long time to get an image that was in focus because I was working with such shallow depth of field and there was a bit of surge on this particular dive.

I have a boxing shrimp in a tank indoors and about every 4-6 weeks he sheds his outer shell and just steps through a split along his back so to speak. He then retreats behind a rock for his new “exterior” to harden and leaves a transparent complete exoskeleton behind. I’m waiting for him to do this in front of me but I doubt he ever will! I thought at first he’d died! Every single little feeler and whisker is intact on the “coat” he steps out of.

  • Stephen Colquitt replied

He must be very healthy if he is moulting so often. Sounds like a freaky thing to watch though.

i love this shot and all of them from that watery world..

  • Stephen Colquitt replied

Thanks Donovan – the water world certainly yields some breathtaking photographic subjects. I think that this image is probably one of my best ever macro photographs. A definate fav
