Grand Café Central is our favourite restaurant in Gouda. We go there regularly for coffee, dinner, lunch or simply a drink.
Grand Café Central is renowned for her delicious home-made apple pie. The pie pieces are so big that we often take a piece of pie for lunch (with whipped cream of course!). Yummy………!

Since 1916, Grand Café Central is located on the Markt 23 in Gouda.
From father to son to son, Grand Central Café was owned by family De Groot.
Grand Café Central had over the years its own character, with its backroom ‘The Salon’ where beautiful Art Deco murals can be seen.
The Rotterdam artist Pieter den Besten made the wall paintings in this room. Den Besten also made the frescoes for Tuschinski in Amsterdam, the Grand Theater Pompenburg in Rotterdam and the ‘Nieuw Amsterdam’ of the Holland-America Line. Most of the work of Den Besten has been lost over the years, among others by the bombing of Rotterdam.
In Gouda, since 1953 the murals were hidden behind wood paneling. During the renovation in 1992, the paintings were made visible again. On two opposite walls of ‘The Salon’, thirteen stylized female figures in pastel tones can be seen. The original work had sixteen female figures, but three characters deceased during renovation in 1939.‘The Salon’ is a protected national monument.
