Taken at the zoo in Jacksonville, Florida. Most of these are seen in southern Florida and not in the northern parts. That is why I went ahead and took the shot when I got the chance since I seldom get to south Florida. We have the Brown Pelican up in the northern parts. The whites seem to be larger than the browns. Both are prehistoric in looks to me and a wonder in the air.

Hey WT. I love these giant pelicans too! In a couple of weeks, perhaps the 2nd week of October, they will be landing in Sebastian Florida for the winter. If you ever want to come by this way then, I’ll take you there to take pics if you like, real up close too!

Franklin….I really appreciate the offer but seldom get down that way. I wish I could as I would love to hit the Everglades and some of the better birding places in the south of the state. It took a few years and the moon in the right phase and all the numbers lining up correctly just to make it to St Augustine this year. In fact the first try was a no go due to my first broken bone in 72 years…that made me cancel reservations in 2008! So…with my age and economic conditions…no COLAs on pensions and Social Security next few years…i am not planning to go much of anywhere. By the time I can save up it will most likely go for a casket! (8>) But you keep on getting those shots and showing them to us.

Oh… guess I jumped the gun here…lol Anyway your always welcome to see my pictures when they come in…lol

  • Thanks Franklin…you take my kind of photos and I love looking at other’s photos. They inspire me to go do more. Even at this advanced age and after being behind a camera as long as I have been. There is an old photographer’s saying: “f8 and Being There!” The Being there is a great part of being a good photographer. More than having the most up to date equipment. I always envy those who live in the Western mountain areas…they just walk outside and there are photos everywhere! Not so in south Alabama! LOL TBird
