Tacoma, Washington, where I’ve lived for 40 years, was settled even before Seattle in the 1850s. It was the terminus for the railroad, and lumber built this town. It also has a deeper natural harbor than Seattle, and it’s crammed with gorgeous late 19th and early 20th Century architecture. Mt. Rainier, in the title drawing, was originally called Tahoma – - the mountain that was God – - by the earliest Americans.
