Subject: A Female Purple Finch (Thanks lorilee)
Location: Rockaway, NJ, USA
Equipment: Nikon D3100 w/Nikon 70-300mm Zoom Lens

Adult male Purple Finches are raspberry red on the head, breast, back and rump; their back is streaked. Adult females have light brown upperparts and white underparts with dark brown streaks throughout; they have a white line on the face above the eye. These birds forage in trees and bushes, sometimes in ground vegetation. They mainly eat seeds, berries and insects. They are fond of sunflower seeds, millet, and thistle. I caught this little one eating oxthorn in my back yard.

finch, bird, nature

I’ve always appreciated nature, but I didn’t show interest in photography until digital started to come into it’s own. I had many cheap cameras over the years, but when I got the Nikon D3100 for my birthday last year, I really started to realize what photography was all about. I’ve had such a blast learning on the go over the past 10 months. I’ve gotten shots that I could have only dreamed of a year ago. I hope you all enjoy my photos, and by all means, BUY SOMETHING! =)

    She’s beautiful . . . looks like a female Purple Finch!! :o)

  • Thanks lorilee. I was leaning towards a type of finch also, but they are all so similar. It’s maddening. =)
