Subject: Female Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Location: Lake Telemark, NJ, USA
Equipment: Nikon D3100 and Nikon 70-300mm zoom lens

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are sexually dimorphic. The adult male has a ruby red throat patch, also known as a gorget which may appear black in some lighting, and a dark forked tail. The female (shown here) has a dark rounded tail with white tips and generally no throat patch, though she may sometimes have a light or whitish throat patch. The male is smaller than the female, and has a slightly shorter beak. A molt of feathers occurs once a year, and begins during the autumn migration. This pretty little lady didn’t mind me sitting so close and put on quite an aerial display for me.

I’ve always appreciated nature, but I didn’t show interest in photography until digital started to come into it’s own. I had many cheap cameras over the years, but when I got the Nikon D3100 for my birthday last year, I really started to realize what photography was all about. I’ve had such a blast learning on the go over the past 10 months. I’ve gotten shots that I could have only dreamed of a year ago. I hope you all enjoy my photos, and by all means, BUY SOMETHING! =)
