The rosy maple moth (Dryocampa rubicunda ) is a North American moth in the Saturniidae family. They have reddish-to-pink legs and antennae, yellow bodies and hindwings, and pink forewings with a triangular yellow band across the middle. Males have bushier antennae than females. As the name implies, rosy maple moths mainly feed on Maples, particularly Red Maple, Silver Maple, and Sugar Maple. Sometimes these moths become pests on maple trees. I had only heard about, but never seen one of these striking moths until about a week ago, but had no camera then. Thankfully, this beauty was sleeping on a leaf below my porch light. I got him to climb onto my hand and he sat for a while and smiled for the camera. I took this on my porch in Rockaway, NJ USA with my Nikon D3100 and my new Nikon 105mm macro lens.

I’ve always appreciated nature, but I didn’t show interest in photography until digital started to come into it’s own. I had many cheap cameras over the years, but when I got the Nikon D3100 for my birthday last year, I really started to realize what photography was all about. I’ve had such a blast learning on the go over the past 10 months. I’ve gotten shots that I could have only dreamed of a year ago. I hope you all enjoy my photos, and by all means, BUY SOMETHING! =)

It’s funny, when I got my macro lens it opened up a whole new world! This is beautiful and thank you so much for sharing, I would have never know of their existance. I’m finding I have so many different things in my garden and the macro is so much fun.

    Gabe :)

  • I feel the same way. I LOVE my macro lens!!

what an amazing creature!! Never seen anything remotely like it. Congrats on the feature!

  • Thank you very much. Apparently they are a very common moth in New Jersey, but this is only the second one I had ever seen in my 40 years. He almost looks like a piece of candy. =)
