Common snapping turtles are noted for their belligerent disposition when out of the water, their powerful beak-like jaws, and their highly mobile head and neck. In some areas they are hunted very heavily for their meat, a popular ingredient in turtle soup. These turtles have lived for up to 47 years in captivity, while the lifespan of wild individuals is estimated to be around 30 years. They can reach up to 75lbs.but that is rare. This one is no where near that large. This slow moving fellow gave me plenty of photo ops today. I didn’t want to test that belligerent attitude so I kept my distance and let him reach water. I took this picture near Lake Telemark in Rockaway, NJ USA with my Nikon D3100 and 70-300mm zoom lens.
