I was in my back yard with my Nikon D3100 and 70-300mm zoom lens in Rockaway, NJ USA today enjoying a gorgeous early spring day, when I noticed this adorable little female house sparrow in my thorn bush. This is not unusual at all. They often use that thorn bush for protection and sit in it between feeder visits. What WAS unusual was that I approached her to get a picture and she didn’t seem to mind. I snapped off a few nice shots and was very surprised by how cooperative she seemed to be. Then all of a sudden, she thrashed violently, terrified of my presence. I realized that her wing was jammed up in the thorn bush. I felt terrible as she thrashed and used her beak in a seemingly futile attempt to try to free herself. I decided that I had to at least try to free her. She was DEEP in the thorn bush, but the thorns were thinner from the back side of the bush. I put on some gloves and found a long stick. Needless to say, I scratched myself pretty good getting in that thorn bush, but still couldn’t get close enough to get a hand on her. She thrashed again and I was worried that she would hurt herself further so I backed off a little bit and tried to assess her situation. I noticed that her wing was jammed under a thorn and was trapped under another small branch as a result. Kind of like if your foot was jammed between two rocks. I decided to use the long stick I found to brake the branch, hoping that it would set her free. I gently moved the stick toward her and she didn’t move a muscle. I moved it up against the branch and broke it quite easily. She was immediately freed and retreated to the very center of the bush. I watched intently as she sat and rested (I’m sure she was exhausted). Her wing SEEMED fine, but I still worried that it was injured. After about ten minutes, she worked her way to the outer part of the bush and flew away like nothing happened. Needless to say, that really made my day. I made my way inside to find some bandaids and neosporin. =)

I’ve always appreciated nature, but I didn’t show interest in photography until digital started to come into it’s own. I had many cheap cameras over the years, but when I got the Nikon D3100 for my birthday last year, I really started to realize what photography was all about. I’ve had such a blast learning on the go over the past 10 months. I’ve gotten shots that I could have only dreamed of a year ago. I hope you all enjoy my photos, and by all means, BUY SOMETHING! =)
