The American Goldfinch is a granivore and adapted for the consumption of seedheads, with a conical beak to remove the seeds and agile feet to grip the stems of seedheads while feeding. It is a social bird, and will gather in large flocks while feeding and migrating. It may behave territorially during nest construction, but this aggression is short-lived. Its breeding season is tied to the peak of food supply, beginning in late July, which is relatively late in the year for a finch. This species is generally monogamous, and produces one brood each year.Human activity has generally benefited the American Goldfinch. It is often found in residential areas, attracted to bird feeders which increase its survival rate in these areas. Deforestation also creates open meadow areas which are its preferred habitat. This little female was just relaxing in a bush along the side of my yard, so I played a goldfinch all from my bird call CD. She was very cute and bolted around my yard in curiosity. I took this in Rockaway, NJ USA with my Nikon D3100 and the 70-300mm zoom lens.

I’ve always appreciated nature, but I didn’t show interest in photography until digital started to come into it’s own. I had many cheap cameras over the years, but when I got the Nikon D3100 for my birthday last year, I really started to realize what photography was all about. I’ve had such a blast learning on the go over the past 10 months. I’ve gotten shots that I could have only dreamed of a year ago. I hope you all enjoy my photos, and by all means, BUY SOMETHING! =)
