Chipmunks have an omnivorous diet consisting of grain, nuts, fruit, berries, birds’ eggs, small frogs, fungi, worms, insects and on occasions small mammals like young mice. At the beginning of autumn, many species of chipmunk begin to stockpile these goods in their burrows, for winter. Cheek pouches allow chipmunks to carry multiple food items to their burrows for either storage or consumption. This little guy was really stuffing himself with these unsalted peanuts I baited him with. I took this on the steps in my front yard in Rockaway, NJ USA with my Nikon D3100 and the 70-300mm zoom lens.

I’ve always appreciated nature, but I didn’t show interest in photography until digital started to come into it’s own. I had many cheap cameras over the years, but when I got the Nikon D3100 for my birthday last year, I really started to realize what photography was all about. I’ve had such a blast learning on the go over the past 10 months. I’ve gotten shots that I could have only dreamed of a year ago. I hope you all enjoy my photos, and by all means, BUY SOMETHING! =)

Surely he is not going to eat all those peanuts?? great capture William, love it.

    Cheers Jude

  • Thanks Jude. Actually, he didn’t eat any of them. He was stuffing his cheeks and storing them in his burrow. They’re for the winter. =)

Such an adorable nature image.. that pile of snacks ought to keep that little one supplied for a couple of months… did you tell him not to eat them all at once? I always am pleased to see my first chipmunk after the winter months…Wonderful photography… I am enjoying browsing through your portfolio.

  • Aww thanks for the nice words Kat. I know right where this little guys burrow is, so baiting him was pretty easy. He stored them just as a responsible chipmunk should. =)

That’s just so cute! It’s amazing how much they can expand those cheeks to fit so much in! Great shot William.

  • Yeah I love the shots I see of them stuffing circus peanuts in their cheeks. Thanks for the kind words. =)
