Artist's Description

Most predators have learned that the monarch butterfly makes a poisonous snack. The toxins from the monarch’s milkweed diet have given the butterfly this defense. In either the caterpillar or butterfly stage the monarch needs no camouflage because it takes in toxins from the milkweed and is poisonous to predators. Many animals advertise their poisonous nature with bright colors… just like the monarch! I had never gotten within ten feet of a Monarch to get a photograph until yesterday. I caught this male Monarch sunning himself and was able to approach without him bolting. I got several good shots of him before I went for broke. I stuck my finger underneath him and he climbed on with no hesitation and stayed for a good minute! I was so excited that I started shaking. LOL. I captured this beauty on my finger along the shore of Lake Telemark in Rockaway, NJ. I used a Nikon Coolpix L110 digital camera.
