Artist's Description

Grasshoppers prefer to eat grasses, leaves and cereal crops. Some will tend to eat from a single host plant, while others will eat from a variety of sources throughout the day. Only one of the 8000 species of grasshopper will only eat a single specie of plant. In very young stage, the grasshopper has no wings. In later stages, wings are visible as small pads at end of thorax. Predators of grasshoppers include birds, lizards, mantids, spiders, and rodents. This guy must have thought I was a predator, because he jumped off into the distance right after I took this shot. I took this along the shore of Lake Ames in Rockaway, NJ. I used a Nikon Coolpix L110 digital camera.
