These large birds are one of the largest flying birds in the world. They are native to Europe, but have become fairly common on the east coast of the USA. They are very territorial and males WILL attack humans if they feel their territory is being threatened. I captured this handsome (and very tame) fellow on Lake Ames in Rockaway, NJ. I used a Kodak Z812 IS digital camera.

I’ve always appreciated nature, but I didn’t show interest in photography until digital started to come into it’s own. I had many cheap cameras over the years, but when I got the Nikon D3100 for my birthday last year, I really started to realize what photography was all about. I’ve had such a blast learning on the go over the past 10 months. I’ve gotten shots that I could have only dreamed of a year ago. I hope you all enjoy my photos, and by all means, BUY SOMETHING! =)

So beautiful!! I did not know they flew!! i never thought about them flying. This is such a wonderful capture!! Thanks for info on them!!

  • Actually, they are one of the most powerful flying birds as well. When they fly their flapping wings make a throbbing sound that can be heard from up to a mile away. I’ve had a few fly over me and the sound is really impressive. :)
