Beautiful Halloween Pennant dragonfly against the blue sky.

William Brennan

Rockaway, United States

Artist's Description

This is the largest, most widely distributed, and perhaps most colorful small pennant species. It forages from atop tall grasses, weeds and stems in open fields some distance from the water. It perches uniquely, with the fore and hind wings in different planes. The fore wings are held somewhat vertically and the hind wings horizontally. Most activity takes place in the early to mid morning hours. Females lay eggs similarly to other species, accompanied by males. Its fluttering flight has been compared to that of a butterfly. This little lady show no fear of me and actually landed on my finger at one point. This shot was taken in my back yard in Rockaway, NJ USA. I used a Kodak Z812 IS.
