Halloween Pennant cleaning her eye.

Artist's Description

The Halloween Pennant (Celithemis eponina) is a medium sized dragonfly which occurs across most of the eastern U.S. It is a striking dragonfly, one of the most beautiful in the country; is hard to misidentify with its orange and black wings. Males are not territorial, perch near edge of ponds, waiting for incoming females. Mating typically takes place in the morning. Oviposition is in tandem. Frequently seen perched on weeds in fields as it forages, pivoting with the wind. I found this female on a twig in my back yard in Rockaway, NJ. She was completely oblivious to my presence for the most part. I was actually petting her at one point and she landed on my finger for a few seconds. She is VERY TINY! About 1.5 inches long at best. :)
