This is a male mute swan and a handsome one at that. They can be very tame, but have been known not only to attack people, but other birds, predators such as foxes, and even boats if they feel their territory or family are being threatened. They are one of the world’s heaviest flying birds. The males average about 26 lbs. while the females around 20 lbs. It is native to much of Europe and Asia, and (as a rare winter visitor) the far north of Africa. It is also an introduced species in North America, Australasia and southern Africa. This fellow has been very tolerant of me mainly because I bring him and his girlfriend bread every so often. It’s funny to watch them soften it in the water before they eat it. I took this picture from the shore of Lake Ames in Rockaway, NJ. I took this with a Kodak Z812 IS.
