Copper Creek Falls II, Lewis River, Skamania County, Washington
Copper Creek feeds into the Lewis River after only a short tumble down through the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington. The terrain here is steep; the forest becomes largely impenetrable only feet from its established trails. To get the perspective of the falls seen in this photo, I wrestled my gear part way down the creek’s nearly vertical embankments and perched, suspended over thin air, on the roots of a crumbling Sitka.
Above Swift Reservoir, the Lewis is an amazing river of incredible natural beauty. It and its surrounds deserve our attention and preservation. The Lewis once held thriving runs of salmon and steelhead but today, due to dams and other human encroachment, both are greatly diminished. This is a sad and familiar story in the northwest. Where this photo was taken, on the upper portion of the river between Mts. Adams and St. Helens, the river holds Dolly Varden, Brook trout, and Rainbow trout.
All proceeds from the sale of my work are donated to Oregon Trout, a statewide conservation group working to restore freshwater health and habitat through innovation and education.
