At sunrise, a joyful squirrel comes out from behind his beautifully decorated lava-rock home and begins to sing a poem to his beloved pine cone nearby.

The colorful decorations on the lava is lichen, a simple slow-growing plant that typically forms a low crustlike, leaflike, or branching growth on rocks, walls, and trees. It’s one of nature’s first methods to break down material into soil so other plants can grow…like pine trees and the beloved pine cone above.
