At sunrise, and using the safety of my vehicle, I photographed this up-close portrait of a bull elk bugling as he crossed the road.

I started out as an artist, became a pilot, and ended up where I am now: nature photographer and educator. Being a pilot allowed me to observe the Earth and humanity’s impact on it from 30,000 feet for many years. It allowed me to experience different cultures and to see the world through many lenses.

Nicely done, don’t get to close, though! They are so unpredictable during the rut. May have to hit ya up for some location advice for next season up in Yellowstone for the Rut, we are thinking about heading up there, we usually stay in CO to capture it all, but the fences in RMNP have really put a damper on things

  • thank you John…I do keep my distance, but sometimes you get lucky and a bull will cross right by the vehicle for a nice safe close-up…I love the Madison and Swan Lake areas to observe elk in Yellowstone :-)
