That's How Lucky I Am
This one just kind of popped in there today.
That's How Lucky I Am belongs to the following groups:
! Creative Writing & Poetry !, Midnight Ramblers, The New Beat Generation and The Red Writing RoomWhen I was young I had and accident, and it almost killed me. People told me how lucky I was. To have lived, they meant. And back then I agreed with them. If I had my time again I would have said something different to those people. When they told me I was lucky I would say, yeah maybe.
I was lucky enough to have lived long enough to see my dog die that year. He was my best friend, I loved him and his name was Rusty. At the time I didn’t really understand but he had a twisted bowel and had to be put down.
I was lucky enough to have lived long enough to have a girl friend. Later she cheated on me with my best friend. She was my first love and her name was Nina. At the time I didn’t really understand how she could do it but she had her own problems. I guess.
I was lucky enough to have lived long enough to see a war. I got to see the world, albeit through a smoky haze. I formed some of the closest bonds a man can have, pity many of them didn’t make it back. At the time I didn’t really understand the whole point of it. I guess in some ways I still don’t.
I was lucky enough to have lived long enough to get married. We had ourselves some children and a home with all the trimmings. What we never really had was honesty or communication. Or a dog. Eventually we had ourselves a divorce. She got the kids and I got the house, but it was never a home again.
I was lucky enough to have lived long enough to reconcile with my wife. On her death bed. The doctors told me cancer. My wife told me sorry.
I was lucky enough to have lived long enough to have my son see a war. He came back. People said how lucky he was. To have lived they meant. He agreed with them, but he will never walk again.
I was lucky enough to have lived long enough to have retired from my job. I had all the time in the world to sit around and take it easy. Actually I did a lot of sitting around. You see I was lucky enough to have children that were very successful and very busy. They visited when they could. Once or twice a year. I’m very proud of them.
I was lucky enough to have out lived all my friends. Now I am all alone. My only friends are doctors, nurses. And now, I am waiting for my luck to run out.
These days when people ask me about my life I tell them, when I was young I had and accident, and it almost killed me. People told me how lucky I was…
gretchen .
Heavy writing brother. It makes me think of The giving tree by Shel Silverstein, what’s really worth having? What actually makes someone lucky? Excellent work.
Wordslinger replied
Thanks gretchen. It was a bit heavy. Everything is relative and everything has two sides. It got a bit dark but I didn’t really mean it to. Thanks for commenting.
butchart
what gretchen said…. but i hope your life turns out much better.. i think it is possible to create our own luck…. have you ever read “the alchemist” by paul cuehlo? if not i highly recommend it.. it might just change how you view the world…....b
Wordslinger replied
Yep read it. It was awesome. By the way I don’t necessarily view the world like this. Some one said something today and it just triggered this story. It’s a work of fiction :)
butchart
i had that much figured… wasn’t calling you a pessimist.. i just thought you would enjoy the book….... it’s all good…. :)

Cool ;)
Christie Moses
the yin and yang of life. How creative this story is. Really great writing Luke xoxo
Wordslinger replied
Thanks Christie. I wanted to keep it balanced, like he isn’t really complaining, more reflecting.

We go through life saying and listening to sound bites – stock phrases and sayings, because we feel we have to say something… this is what I got from this piece. A statement made but what was the real thought behind it. Many years ago when I split from a partner of 10 years, many people said to me “lucky you didn’t have any children”, as if that made it all ok some how. I know they didn’t mean any harm, just had to say something! Like the fact this piece made me stop and think… good write there Wordslinger. x
Wordslinger replied
Yeah totally agree. We have been programmed from infancy to respond certain ways or say certain things in certain situations. Sometimes we don’t even really think about how we really feel we just switch to auto pilot. Thanks for your comments TC.

I think this is heavy because it hits so close to home, pretty truthful. You kind of hope that’s not the way life turns out but who knows really. If you can write heavy stuff you can write anything. Cool story.
Wordslinger replied
Thanks Bill, I kind of wanted it to portray some emotion without making it too much doom and gloom.
Andrew Bailey
This is an essential piece of writing. Well crafted and easy to read. The pints it makes are germane to our individual existences. Well done.
Wordslinger replied
Hey Andrew. Thanks for the fantastic compliment! I appreciate it.
Mardra
Very good painting with your words. I particularly like your use of punctuation. You mastered the flow (or stopping) of thoughts in this way. Well done.
Wordslinger replied
Hey Mardra, yeah that is actually something I have been working on for a little while so I am glad it turned out as desired. Thanks for noticing.
