I took this on 3/12/2010 in Elizabethtown Kentucky USA about 30 miles from my home.
I had driven to E-Town to try and buy a CPU fan for my computer because mine had quit and I couldn’t use my computer at all. We had been having a lot of rain and thunderstorms for the last week, but there was some clearing and the Sun had started to peek out from the heavy clouds late in the afternoon. I was talking to the gentleman in the computer store when I looked out the storefront window and noticed that the sky was getting very dramatic. I paid for the fan hurried to my car and headed over to the reservoir hoping to get there before the Sun was too far gone for any good photos. By the time I got there and out of the car it was just gray and overcast not to mention getting really late for a chance at getting photos with enough light to amount to anything. I had hoped to photo some Canada geese but there were none around. I was just about ready to head back up the hill to the car when the Sun exploded out from behind the clouds and cast the most beautiful golden color on the whole area. I immediately noticed the great color in the Eastern sky and thought there might be a photo opp. All of a sudden, off in the distance I heard one of my favorite sounds.
Since the time that I was a child, I have loved the sound wild Canada Geese. I couldn’t even see them at first but then they came into view as tiny specs. I was hoping they would come close enough for me get a chance to catch them in flight. Darn! they were staying way wide to my left and went past me, then all of a sudden they started banking and made a hard turn, then started back towards me and were going to come right over me, I was wrong! They were coming in low and were going to land on the water right in front of me! I had a chance to get off 3 pictures and then my battery died! They landed on the water about 50 feet in front of me, the Sun had slipped back behind some clouds, it was getting dark fast and my photo shoot was over. I couldn’t even see if I had captured them until I got home, put the new fan on the computer then I could download the photos to see what I got, if anything, worth using. Well I was pretty pleased with the outcome, for sure.
I named this photo “On A Wing And A Prayer” because if you look at the goose on the bottom you can see that he has a hole showing through his right wing and feathers missing on the tip as well. To me, it looks as though he has been shot, but it didn’t seem to bother him at this point. It was a very good day indeed!
