"Sh-Sh-Sh, Baby Sleeping"
This is Rowdy, on the first day that I rescued him. I had just stepped outside when I heard a lot of noise way high up in the pine trees right in front of our house. I looked up and saw a huge crow had dropped a much smaller something that was crashing through the pine limbs and headed right for me. The tiny little critter landed about 3 feet from me and let out a scream that I think you could have heard in the next county. I raced over to it before any of my cats that were already on their way could get to it. I picked it up, stuck it under my shirt, ran in the house. Upon inspection I realized that it was a tiny, eyes-still-closed baby Eastern Gray Squirrel.
Lucky for Rowdy he was one fat very wiggly little baby that must have been too much for the crow to hold on to. I took this photo of him after I had fed him his first meal away from mom. Since I had never raised a baby squirrel before I headed to the internet for help, found a site with lots of information and some wonderful ladies that told me everything I needed to get him to grow up to be big, beautiful and healthy. One interesting note. I was told that to know his birth date that all I had to do was wait for his eyes to open count back 5 weeks and that should be just about when he was born. I waited for a few weeks, his eyes opened, counted back, born Aug.3. his birth date, is the same day as mine! He will be 6 years old, on Aug.3rd. I will be somewhat older, however.

Awe, what a wonderful story you have told here, I love it! And discovering that it was born on your birthday, WOW, what a gift from God! So how do you keep track of this little one. . .now fully grown? And what did you feed it to keep it from starving? I’ve bottle fed (with the help of my 2 girls) baby bunnies after discovering that their mommy had been run over by a car in front of our yard. It was tricky getting them to eat but all 5 made it! Instant Fave!

Oh my goodness! The story is as precious as the photograph, which is also wonderful! Is Rowdy now a pet who is comfortable with the cats or a “permanent guest” of your nearby trees? I didn’t know crows would attack anything alive. The ones I know in Weedy Field are positively bullied by the squirrels, who will run right up to them and take a peanut from under their feet! I saw a crow get really annoyed once but he didn’t do anything more than make a half-hearted gesture after the brave squirrel robbed and ran. LOL!
