King's Cup Air Race 1950s by

This is this month’s (Oct) entry for my Art Club challenge. “Something sporty”
So being keen on aircraft I thought of the Post War Air Races using ex WW2 fighters.

This is a made up scenario so I don’t know if these two planes ever flew against each other.
The blue plane is flown by Group Captain Peter Townsend, Princess Margaret’s friend. I believe she sponsored him.
The other white/silver plane is an RAF entry. (41 Sqdn)
So have you decided what a/c they are. ?? See next image for closeup !!
The Spit is from 41 Sqdn and in 1947s Blackpool Air Race, RN201 was a Mk.XIVe with a Griffon Engine, and clipped wings. Later 41 Sqdn flew Mk. 21 and 22s with 5 bladed props.
The Hurricane Mk.IIc PZ865 (G-AMAU) is the “Last of the Many” and still with the B of B Memorial Flight. It came 2nd in the 1950 Kings Air Race.
This is drawn in water colour pencils on Bockingford 140 lb paper 16″ × 12″, October 2011

My main interest is painting Aviation Art.
I get a lot of enjoyment researching the historical background behind the picture I’ve been commissioned to paint.
I work in acrylic on my big paintings on canvas board but use water colors, pastels, soft and oil, for smaller pieces.
I also enjoy doing pet portraits in soft pastels on tinted paper, from photographs. Ideal presents for Xmas and birthdays.

Beautiful work for your challenge, Woodie.

  • I enjoyed the research but there is very little written on post-war Air Races.
    Cheers Neil

Looks like a Hurricane Mk I and a Spitfire, maybe Mk XVI? I can’t see the rear of the Spitty’s cockpit to be sure! Great work mate!

  • Hurricane is a Mk.IIc the “Last of the Many”. See above at top.
The Spit could be a Mk.XIVe or F21/22.
    Thanks Neil
