Artist's Description

In 1931, a Rolls Royce engined, Supermarine S6B racing seaplane, piloted by Flt Lt Boothman, won the Schneider Trophy outright for Great Britain. Reginald Mitchell, designer of the legendary Spitfire, designed the S6B.
The race took place round The Solent, the stretch of water between the Isle of Wight and the English mainland. The team was based at the flying-boat station RAF Calshot, which includes Calshot Castle. Lady Houston had to sponsor the GB/RAF team, as the Labour Government of the day would not support this venture.
