1940 Wife & friend (WARBIRDS) by

This is my mother’s cousin’s future wife wearing her 1st husband’s tunic, an air gunner and her friend wearing his pilot’s tunic.
Both lost their live in a Defiant in the early stages of the war.

My main interest is painting Aviation Art.
I get a lot of enjoyment researching the historical background behind the picture I’ve been commissioned to paint.
I work in acrylic on my big paintings on canvas board but use water colors, pastels, soft and oil, for smaller pieces.
I also enjoy doing pet portraits in soft pastels on tinted paper, from photographs. Ideal presents for Xmas and birthdays.

Nice old picture Neil. Defiants were a death trap. Uncle of mine was training first as an air gunner and all his training section were posted to Defiants but because kept getting air sick they retrained him as a fitter. Saved his life I guess. – Ted

  • Thanks Ted,
You would get tossed about in a Defiant as it was supposed to be a fighter.

Too true. The turret was almost impossible to get out of in certain attitudes, never mind the basic lack of soundness of the whole concept. Amusing photo of a special moment, though!

  • Thanks Nigel,
    Terriable design the Defiant.
