Blue Steel standoff bomb (photo) by

Photo taken in 2006, with a Pentax Optio S5n compact camera,
showing my RAF work more than 40 years ago.
This is a V bomber’s standoff bomb, called Blue Steel. I was involved with trials both in the UK and South Australia.
The Vulcan is XM594 of 44 sqdn. Now at Newark Air Museum

My main interest is painting Aviation Art.
I get a lot of enjoyment researching the historical background behind the picture I’ve been commissioned to paint.
I work in acrylic on my big paintings on canvas board but use water colors, pastels, soft and oil, for smaller pieces.
I also enjoy doing pet portraits in soft pastels on tinted paper, from photographs. Ideal presents for Xmas and birthdays.

Neil, I am intrigued how and what this was deployed from? From a bay or under wing? Regards, Peter C.

  • Hi Peter,
This was so big the bottom half stuck out of the bomb bay.
The replacement American stand off bomb was fitted under the wing(s). Both cancelled and replaced by RN Trident Missiles.
    Cheers Neil
