Tea Up on the pan by Woodie

Currently unavailable for purchase

Commission for Lillie, a local Ex-Waaf (WRAF) after her husband died.
Here is the rest of Tea Up. I’ve cut a bit off the sky as it didn’t photo very well!
You notice the little Waafy is chatting up the two officers, pilot and navigator, but to no avail, she married the Flight Sgt, tail gunner.
Acrylic 20 × 15 canvas board

My main interest is painting Aviation Art.
I get a lot of enjoyment researching the historical background behind the picture I’ve been commissioned to paint.
I work in acrylic on my big paintings on canvas board but use water colors, pastels, soft and oil, for smaller pieces.
I also enjoy doing pet portraits in soft pastels on tinted paper, from photographs. Ideal presents for Xmas and birthdays.

It was all made up in my little head from the description give to me by Lillie the Waaf bringing the tea round the dispersals.

Nice one Woodie, but a bit sad. My sister helped out in the YMCA during the war and knew quite a lot of rear-gunners. I remember seeing her in tears occasionally as so many didn’t return from a mission – their position being the most vulnerable.

amen the tail gunner,s were prime bait, i,ll never forget the one who was in the tail, the tail got blown off and he fell 19,000 feet and lived to tell he hit a tree covered with snow on a cliff and it slowed him down but the sad thing after the war he was killed falling down some stairs to his home, fate ? i weird

Very nostalgic image. I was just trying to imagine the comaradery the crew must have felt between them and the dread that the tailgunner had. Thought provoking indeed !!

I like the atmosphere of this painting and I think you paint people, which can be difficult to paint, very well indeed. Also the aeroplane is excellently painted – Olive

  • Thanks Olive
There is a more detailed photo called " Detail of tea up on the dispersal" you may like to have a look at.
