Gun Running Trawler WW2 by

This is a new Hi Res image for prints etc
This 1930s Hull fishing trawler was blown up in a harbour in Norway, during WW2, to prevent the guns etc it was carrying for the resistance, falling into German hands.
Painted for the son of the coxswain, who didn’t return from the war.
Acrylic on canvas board 18 × 24″ approx. 1991

My main interest is painting Aviation Art.
I get a lot of enjoyment researching the historical background behind the picture I’ve been commissioned to paint.
I work in acrylic on my big paintings on canvas board but use water colors, pastels, soft and oil, for smaller pieces.
I also enjoy doing pet portraits in soft pastels on tinted paper, from photographs. Ideal presents for Xmas and birthdays.

Marine painting as well as aircraft – you’ve mastered both.

Superb Woodie! Great sense of action. The rough seas and the ominous sky add so much to the story here. Very well painted mate.

I was going to single out a single aspect of this painting to comment on, but couldn’t make my mind up, so I shall just have to say, “wild waves, thunderous sky and photo-realistic boat”. Come on Woodie, there is no element of surprise in waiting to see whether your next painting is a good one or a bad one, as every time it is a good one. Only joking … I wouldn’t expect anything less than remarkable from your paint-brush anyway.
