The Response 1914, (NON.SIBI.SED.PATRIAE.) is the memorial to the sacrifice of the soldiers and their families in 1914, the start of WW1, (also called the GREAT WAR), from Newcastle upon Tyne, in the north east of England.
This monument has been cleaned and Rededicated this year, 2008.
My grand father was an Old Contemptible, (The term “Old Contemptible” was adopted by the Veterans of the 1914 BEF,as a result of the Kaiser’s reference to “wiping out this contemptible little Army” His derisory remark, in true British Fashion, was adopted with fervour & entered the Vocabulary). After the war, suffering from shell shock, he took his family, including my father, to France to work as a gardener etc to an officer he’d served under during the war.
