Painted for the son of the coxswain, who didn’t return from the war.

Acrylic on canvas board 18×24” approx. 1991

Superb Woodie! Great sense of action. The rough seas and the ominous sky add so much to the story here. Very well painted mate.

I was going to single out a single aspect of this painting to comment on, but couldn’t make my mind up, so I shall just have to say, “wild waves, thunderous sky and photo-realistic boat”. Come on Woodie, there is no element of surprise in waiting to see whether your next painting is a good one or a bad one, as every time it is a good one. Only joking … I wouldn’t expect anything less than remarkable from your paint-brush anyway.

Excellent composition and details. You captured the drama of the stormy sky and turbulent sea.Wonderful blend of colors to give the water almost a photographic quality. Superb artwork.

Great man. I love it. I love that “old fashioned” Illustration style. It really communicates the cold winter north sea (I know what I’m talking about here, I live IN it).
By the way, any chance of more information on the boat and it’s crew?.
You see I come from (and live) way up the west coast of Norway. On an island called Stord. My mother’s cousin is a famous Norwegian author named Arnfinn Haga, and he has written a heap (I lost count many years ago) of books about WWII with a focus on the Norwegian resistance during the years of German occupation from 1940 – 1945.
This ship and its crew is bound to be in one of his books (in some dramatic and very true story), so it would be interesting to find out.
Bubble me if you have something, and can share.

    Say it again, great painting…

Hey, I was strolling thru your art and I came across this one, I love it, The reds and oranges are perfect harmonys to the greens and blues. The composition is great with the low horizon showing the tall verticals of the masts. Great job.

A fine painting – excellent waves and sea motion – always difficult to portray satisfactorily.
And a sobering description, to remind us of the sacrifice.

    A suitably artistic tribute, Neil.

  • Woodie replied

    Thanks Colin.
I just expanded the writeup today. I had very little reference when I painted this in 1991. No internet to trawl then!!!LOL
