My great great grandfather was a sea captain from North Shields and my grandma was born there too, so this means a lot to me.

I love this…it has such a timelessness about it. I recently tried my first pen and wash and enjoyed it very much…especially the olde worlde feeling it gives.

A lovely painting, I could sit and look for a long time. They used a ‘sixareen’ in this neck of the woods. they have just launched the first one built in over 100 years.
Woodie replied
Every time I go looking for a coble to photograph I find it is made of fibre-glass!!! Very disappointing.

This is a superb painting, Neil. Nicely atmospheric.
It’s especially interesting to me,as I have been painting scenes using a book of Victorian photos of industrial sailing ships (fishing, coal and timber), from the north and east coast
Woodie replied
Hi Colin,
I think we use the same book(s). He is a superb photographer and an excellent reference for our type of paintings.

My reference is the 1978 book, ‘North East Sail’, by Robert Simper. Compiled photos from 1850’s to 1920’s, from Berwick to the Wash. The most artistic photos in the book, are by F. Sutcliffe, around Whitby harbour.
