Great car, catch and title! I wonder what these are like to drive…

  • Thanks, Bill! I seem to think that the rear wheels are the turning wheels, but not sure. Don’t think you have minor accidents with this vehicle!

I have always said. The Museum should park a Smart car next to it. Well taken John.

  • Thanks, Paul Since I saw one at the NY Intl Auto Show in 1957, first impressions being lasting ones, my “Ultimate Driving Machine”

Great shot John. They don’t make them like they used to…but they seem to be making them this small again!

  • John, thank you for your comment and favorite… both very much appreciated!

I’ve got an Isetta (and yes it is a Red Bubble!!) it’s 52 years old and still going strong, 0 to 60 in…… ok it only does 56. The front wheels do the steering and it drives just like a ‘normal car’ and it can also be parked nose to the curb so you step out of the door straight on to the pavement (sidewalk) due to having the door at the front.
There are so many myths about this little car, when I attend a classic car show I hear them all, the favourite being how a man died in one because he parked it in his garage too close to the back wall and couldn’t get out and couldn’t back because there is no reverse gear. When I hear this one I sometimes start up the car engage reverse and back up a couple of feet or simply open the sun roof, which they all had.
With the recent interest in retro style comebacks, Fiat 500, VW Beetle etc. and the move to smaller city cars I have heard BMW have been working on a new age Isetta to get in on this market, whether it will ever go into production remains to be seen. It’s certainly my Ultimate Driving Machine.

  • Thank you so much for this terrific educational, interesting comment…. truly very much appreciated!
