On Saving A Hummingbird

We saved a hummingbird, today.
Its heart was still beating
When Jim brought it to me.
The male Ruby Throat
Had flown into
A large spider web

Web covered his tiny wings
And strangled his little feet.
I had to wear glasses
To see his feet,
They were so minute.

He watched me intently,
With his beautiful, dark eyes.
He was trembling, very still,
And seemed to have accepted
His fate.

Snatching a pillowcase
I put it on the kitchen counter,
And proceeded to very gently
Peel the web away
From his tiny body.

We gave him nectar
In a lid, and he took a sip.

Needless to say, we were amazed
And in awe of this exquisite creature.

Sam, our kind and gentle dog
Sniffed him, carefully.
He was very interested
In this important rescue.

I carried him outside.
He was slowly recovering
And perched on my finger,
He held on with all of his might.

He stretched a wing and I stroked him,
Amazed at the part I was able to play
In his rescue.

Suddenly, he bolted from my finger
And flew to freedom.

My husband and I were humbled
And thrilled to have helped
This little creature
This tiny, precious bird.
