Perseverance by Bill McMullen

I watched this Great Blue Heron make several unsuccessful attempts to catch something it was intensely focused on. As I was about to leave it made one more lunge and pulled out a very large Bullhead Catfish. The catfish was set on a nearby clump of reeds as it was too large to swallow whole.
Photographed at Petrie Island, Orleans, Ontario.
Canon EOS 7D 1/640s f/8.0 at 400.0mm iso500, handheld.

Spending time in the outdoors has always been a passion of mine. Most of my subject matter is avian but I will readily spend hours photographing almost anything else in the natural world. Currently I live near a small town, Rockland, just east of Ottawa. I work in Ottawa and so most of my photography is done in eastern Ontario. Thank you for dropping by and enjoy.

Nice the water dripping from the beak…And he’s got that eye on you Bill.
    Well Done!

  • Thanks, Ted. I got a few cracks at that shot since he missed a few opportunities.

Nice action and pose and so nice to get the bird this deep in water..something I have only witnessed a few time.

  • Thanks, Gary. I was amazed how far it went in, only to nearly submerge itself when it caught the catfish. On the same side as the Shoveler closer to the causeway. There were two Moorhens in that spot as well.
