This is one of those unforgetable wildlife encounters. Normally, Bitterns are very skittish and blend in so well with their surroundings. That all changed one April morning when I was going for a walk along an atv trail near a marshy area. I saw a large bird backlit further up the path. I managed to loop around it to see it in decent light and to my surprise it was a Bittern and began to walk toward me…Photographed in Clarence-Rockland, Ontario, Canada. Canon EOS 7D ,Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM ,1/800s, f/5.6, iso400.

Spending time in the outdoors has always been a passion of mine. Most of my subject matter is avian but I will readily spend hours photographing almost anything else in the natural world. Currently I live near a small town, Rockland, just east of Ottawa. I work in Ottawa and so most of my photography is done in eastern Ontario. Thank you for dropping by and enjoy.

Thanks, Karen. The white feathers are part of its mating plumage and made spotting it much easier!
