No Master, No Captain

Familiarity breeds contempt

that’s why I dare not get closer

than arms length

and am kept there

I have seen the worst in

women, men and their children

I have no more understanding to spare

I have watched from a distance

I have listened

I have shown compassion

Been tolerant of differences

Challenged my convictions

Sunk to their level

Tried rising above turning the other cheek

Fought eye for an eye

Sought higher awareness

Accepted that everything is a

mirror image of my own weaknesses

as uncomfortable as it is

I have stayed

I have fled

I have raged filled with contempt

Cried rivers to oceans

No wiser for all the despair

No more certain for

having beared witness

I am no longer seduced by

moments of happiness

The coin flips of its own volition

I am no more the master of my fate

than a captain is

to a sinking ship.

No Master, No Captain
