The Unknown Destination
The sound of the distant whistle
stirred a long ago memory,
awakening his elderly and weary mind.
Back to when life was good,
the pace was slow
and people were always kind.
His thoughts drifting back to times
long ago, when he’d sit by the old
Watching, waiting eagerly,
for the first sign of
black smoke billowing out
of the dusty train stack.
He would hear the distant rumble
and his excitement would intensely grow.
Though just a hard-working farm boy,
there was so much more he yearned to know.
Like, where was the train headed
after it went around the bend?
When it reached its destination,
what was waiting at the end?
He imagined as it came passing by
what all was on that train.
Happy or disgruntled passengers,
waiting to be claimed.
Women in fancy dresses with
bustles on their backs.
Men in high-collared shirts and
Sunday best, gliding over
those wonderful railroad tracks.
Quite often he said to himself,
“When I’m grown, I’ll ride that
train to see just where it goes”.
But swiftly flew the precious years,
his boyhood dreams faded all to quickly,
like petals falling from a dying rose.
Left with little else from his care-worn
life, now nearing its journey’s end,
his frail eyes closed in final repose,
still dreaming, “I wonder
what’s round the bend”.
