Original watercolor and inkline depiction of “The Queen of Pentacles” tarot card designed for an Art Nouveau deck. This version without lettering.

I designed this piece as part of a proposal for an all-female tarot card deck to be depicted in an art nouveau style. I also wanted the women to have different ethnicities depending on suit and for the deck to combine astrological (zodiac signs) and wiccan (elements, Four Directions, seasons) components into each card in a meaningful way.

I see Pentacles as an Earth suit, with an Eastern direction, situated at dawn during a bountiful and temperate autumn. Pentacles signify the sensuality of the physical plane, material gain and attainment, as well as being a symbol for the magical arts, the five elements of nature and the five senses. I wanted my Queen of Pentacles to embody opulence, sensuality and abundance. She says, “I Have”, “I Use” and “I Analyze”. I envision all the women in the Pentacles suit as being Latina and/or Mediterranean, and this Queen is lounging on her chaise in a lush garden at dawn, smoking her hookah and feasting on wine and fruit. She is surrounded by symbols of fruitfulness and beauty and her hookah is etched with the zodiac symbols Taurus, Capricorn and Virgo. She welcomes you to indulge with her as her nature is generous. All pentacles are depicted in earthy jewel tones.

  • Eh, they passed on it long ago, but I can’t seem to stop painting them, so there must be a reason, right?
